Toe-Ashuu Pass

Too-Ashuu (also Theo-Ashuu or Camel Pass) is a road pass that connects the Chui Valley with the Suusamyr Pass. To-Ashuu is one of the two automobile passes on the Kyrgyz ridge. The pass is notable for its steep serpentines and the amazing views that open from it. The top point of the pass is at an altitude of 3,400 meters. North and south slopes at the top of the pass are connected by a tunnel that is 2.2 kilometers long. The pass is located in the picturesque Karabalta Gorge, near the village of Sosnovka. Gently rising in the lower part of the gorge, the road makes a sharp ascent - there the degree of ascent does not drop below 12%. Above the tunnel there is an old road, which is interesting for hiking or mountain biking. In addition to the fact that Too-Ashuu is a key part of the Bishkek-Osh highway that connects the north and south of the country, there are many stories and legends associated with the pass. In ancient times the Too-Ashuu Pass was the most important pass of the Great Silk Road. Numerous caravans of camels loaded with goods passed through it on their way to the West. To-Ashuu is also famous for the legend of Kojomkul, a warrior, who carried a wounded horse on his shoulders through the pass. Mountain air of the pass has salutary influence on organism, that's why there is an asthma clinic on the slopes near the pass. On the southern slope is located ski base.
