Shaar Waterfall

The tallest waterfall in Kyrgyzstan and one of the country's most spectacular hidden natural wonders.

Shaar Waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Kyrgyzstan, located in Bash-Kaindy Gorge in the Naryn Region. The free-falling section reaches approximately 220 meters, while the total cascade measures nearly 400 meters, making it one of the largest waterfalls in Central Asia.

Place overview

Shaar Waterfall, also known as Bash-Kaindy Waterfall, is located in Bash-Kaindy Gorge in the At-Bashy District of the Naryn Region at an elevation of around 3,200 meters above sea level.

With a free fall of approximately 220 meters and a total cascade height close to 400 meters, it is recognized as the tallest waterfall in Kyrgyzstan and one of the highest waterfalls in Central Asia.

Unlike most waterfalls in the country, Shaar descends from a massive vertical cliff in several long cascades, creating an impressive natural spectacle, especially during the spring snowmelt.

Another remarkable feature is its isolation. Despite its incredible size, only a small number of travelers visit Shaar each year. Even during the peak season, it is common to spend hours at the waterfall without seeing another tourist.

The journey itself is part of the experience. The trail follows the beautiful Bash-Kaindy Valley through alpine meadows, mountain rivers, conifer forests, and summer pastures where horses, yaks, and sheep graze freely. As you continue deeper into the valley, the waterfall gradually appears in the distance, growing larger with every kilometer.

History

The name Shaar is believed to come from the Kyrgyz word "sharkyratma," meaning "waterfall." It is also commonly known as Bash-Kaindy Waterfall, after the gorge where it is located. The name Bash-Kaindy roughly translates as "Upper Birch Valley."

For centuries, the valley served as an important summer pasture for Kyrgyz nomads. Its abundant water, cool climate, and fertile grasslands made it an ideal place for grazing horses and livestock.

Although Shaar is one of the country's greatest natural landmarks, it remained largely unknown outside the local communities for many years. Only recently has it begun appearing on international trekking routes, yet it still remains one of Kyrgyzstan's least-visited natural attractions.

Flora & Fauna

Bash-Kaindy Gorge is rich in biodiversity.

The lower part of the valley is covered with conifer forests, juniper, and shrubs that gradually transition into alpine meadows at higher elevations. More than 270 plant species have been recorded here, including several rare endemic species native to the Central Tien Shan.

Wildlife includes yaks, marmots, foxes, Siberian ibex, golden eagles, and large herds of horses and sheep. Snow leopards also inhabit the surrounding mountains, although sightings are extremely rare.

Location

Shaar Waterfall is located in the At-Bashy District of the Naryn Region, inside Bash-Kaindy Gorge.

The drive from the city of Naryn takes approximately 2–2.5 hours. From the village of Bash-Kaindy, visitors continue toward the trailhead before beginning the hike. On clear days, the waterfall can even be seen from the Naryn–Torugart Highway.

Hiking Route

The waterfall can only be reached on foot or horseback.

Trail information:

  • Distance: approximately 12–14 km one way
  • Hiking time: 4–5 hours one way
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Elevation: around 3,200 meters
  • Best season: June – September

The trail follows the Bash-Kaindy River through alpine meadows, forests, wooden bridges, and open mountain pastures. The final section leads to a spectacular natural amphitheater where Shaar Waterfall plunges from the towering cliffs.

Most visitors complete the hike in a single day, while others prefer spending a night in a yurt camp or tent to fully enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery.

What to See

Shaar Waterfall

The highlight of the journey is Shaar Waterfall itself — the tallest waterfall in Kyrgyzstan and one of the largest in Central Asia. Its free-falling section reaches approximately 220 meters, while the entire cascade extends to nearly 400 meters.

Thanks to its enormous size, the waterfall becomes visible long before reaching the final viewpoint. During late spring and early summer, when snowmelt is at its peak, the water flow becomes especially powerful, and the roar of the waterfall can be heard from far away.

Bash-Kaindy Gorge

The surrounding Bash-Kaindy Gorge is just as impressive as the waterfall itself.

The trail passes through conifer forests, alpine meadows, mountain rivers, and wide open pastures. Even during the hottest summer days, the valley remains cool thanks to its elevation and fresh mountain streams. More than 270 plant species grow here, including several rare endemic plants of the Central Tien Shan.

Horseback Riding

Many local guides offer the option of reaching the waterfall on horseback.

Horseback riding through Bash-Kaindy Valley is one of the most scenic experiences in the Naryn Region. Riders cross mountain streams, pass alpine meadows, and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding Tien Shan mountains.

For many travelers, the horseback journey becomes just as memorable as the waterfall itself.

Central Tien Shan Panoramas

Throughout the hike, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Central Tien Shan.

As the forest gradually disappears at higher elevations, the landscape opens into wide mountain valleys, snow-covered peaks, and endless alpine scenery stretching for kilometers.
